Although I haven't technically started my fishless cycle, I'm itching to know what my tank will become 'home' to. Its a 25 gallon long tank.
Idea #1:
6 penguin tetras
4 mollies (1 male, 3 females)
4 cherry barbs (1 male, 3 females)
2 dwarf gouramis
and maybe 1 betta (male)

Idea #2:
6 silver tip tetras
6 top sail platies (1 male, 5 females)
3 Boesemani Rainbow Fish (1 male, 2 females)

The problem? Which idea to chose. I really like the top sail platies, but if I chose idea #1 I'll just get the platies for one of my 10 gallon tanks. I'm torn between both ideas and unfortunately don't have the room for another tank right now :(

I believe that either of those options would be fine, but #1 might be just a little bit crowded, but could probably work.

Would you consider swapping between the two? Or do you want to pick number one OR number two?

If you swapped the three rainbows for the two dwarf gourami, and chose number two (silver tip tetras, platies, and gourami) I think that would a good stock and would look nice.

Or if you chose a certain one, I would go with number two. That choice has a little more breathing room (not much considering that the platies WILL breed) and will seem more logical IMO

GOODLUCK!! :)

I think I will go with option 2.
Would a betta be happy with these fish?
And I think I would rather have the penguin tetras than the silver tips, so I will change the plan to
6 penguin tetras
6 topsail platies
3 Boesemani Rainbow Fish
1 betta

Would I be able to put in ghost shrimp or would the rainbow fish eat them? I would also like a small breed of loach, the clown loaches are beautiful but my tank isn't big enough, and I'm not sure whether the snake like loaches are the kuhlii loaches but my boyfriend is scared of them (panzy, lol :)). If thats the best suited loach though, too bad for him :)

Sounds nice, albeit a little crowded for me. Rainbows are schooling fish, I'd prefer to see them in groups of at least 6. Kuhli loaches would do well in that tank. I'd do the tetras, platies, a betta and 4-6 kuhlis. The betta might help control the platy population, but if not be prepared to cull the herd periodically as they will overrun your tank, given the chance.

I'm not overly worried about their breeding habbits lol, I have 3 empty 10 gallon tanks, and an empty 15 gallon as well that I could house the survivors in lol.

What if I skipped the rainbow fish, and added the two dwarf gouramis instead?

I would not suggest putting a male betta w/ dwarf gouramis - they will fight.

okay so my newest (and hopefully last) list is as follows:

6 penguin tetras
6 top sail platies
2 neon blue dwarf gouramis
5 kuhli loaches

anyone see any problems?

What type of plants/hiding places should I offer these fish?
