My sump and plumbing idea - Will it Work?

Hiya PM...Thanks for them couple of things..I agree with you on the pipe diameter, it is rather large...On your advice, shall change to 1" internal diameter UK Standard...That equates to 1 1/4" in the US....

Have not brought my overflow box yet, had a guy give me some info on a home made one he did, which worked very well, how-ever, i would also like to draw on your experience on this matter, so yes, i will have the info from you mate..Very kind of you buddy...

I have also 1) swapped the baffles around on the return end so they are opposite to what is in the picture above...2) Moved the extra return pipe that i currently have on the main return feed and now will have that on the intake side and send that over into the fuge so full flow aint going straight through the fuge...3) decided on my pump, its going to be a New-Jet 1700 ( 1700Litres per hour ), that should do well for my setup...

I now have to decide on how to seperate the fuge / sump and how tall to make the baffles next...My tank size is L=36" W=12" D=15"

What are yours and other peoples thoughts on what i have said?

Thanks to everybody who is helping me along with this..Being honest, i could not of got this far without peoples help and advice..Your all great

Niko

Hiya born2l...

Only problem there is going to be that the pipe is going to be going off in the wrong direction which would probably mean more andgle joins to bring it up to the tank..Am i right in saying that will add more resistance onto the water flow?

Thanks for you info matey

Niko

Why do you have a return back to the refugium?

I believe that is to control flow...so your pump can keep running at optimal, but some of the water is just directed back into the sump.

Not sure though. ;)

This is a good thread, though, as I think I'm going to try a fuge for my 29g tank.

Actually, thinking of dropping the 55g (and all my dreams of a tang) and going nano.

But, I have lots of questions, just like Niko.

One thing, though, in your drawing: Wouldn't you want the bubble trap between the skimmer and the fuge so all those microbubbles don't go in there? You know, the one the water has to go over, then the one it goes under, then the one it goes over again.

so i have control of the flow on the return line. I used the tap on there to balance the overflow and return flow...worked a treat...I still had very flow flow through the fuge and the plumbing worked just how i wanted it too...

Hey Damon, you can really have at either to be honest. How it is setup, i have no micro bubbles back to the display tank...

Thanks for asking mate

I was actually worried about the fuge. Most fuges I've seen end up being frag tanks and housing fish and all sorts of cool little guys. I would think you'd want to keep microbubbles out of that fuge section, too.

But i don't know...I haven't even gotten to the planning section of mine yet.

I would not intentially put any fish in there anyway as there not really any swimming room because of the macro alage and live rock rubble, the main concern is to stop the microbubbles from going back to the display tank, and it works very well...

Thanks
