My Tank Has Algae Problems PLEASE HELP!!

It's pretty strange for this to happen in such a mature tank if nothing has changed.

I really would encourage bigger water changes.

Look forward to hearing how you go.

yeah bigger water changes sounds about right, If i left my lights on for that long then it would be one hell of a slime ball! I only have my lights on from 6 till 11 at the min due to the room the tanks in being so well lit during the day. Hope you sort things out!

I'm sorry to chime in, but doesn't an algae problem mean that there is some imbalance between light and nutrients and carbon? If there is too much light and not enough nutrients or vice versa, algae will propagate. adding more plants to use up nutrients that the algae would otherwise use could sometimes reduce the algae. lessening the light photoperiod could reduce algae as well. adding nutrients or carbon could also reduce algae. It sounds like she could benefit from plants (or more plants.)

Has anyone heard of turning off light for 2 hours in the middle of the day to reduce algae? I read this in a book and it says it stunts the algae somehow.

I've read the same thing... something about disrupting the process of photosynthesis with a short dark period. IDK if it's true, though.

EDIT: I just spoke with a biology teacher who stated that photosynthesis would only stop while dark, but would begin immediately when light started again. Whether this would inhibit growth of the algae, got me a "probably only when dark," answer.

It's been 5 days since I started this thread. My tank is still green & cloudy. Today I'm going to replace the bubble tube & do another small water change. I'm going to buy some of that Green Killing Machine londonloco is talking about. I'm going to use it as a last resort but I'd like to have it in my hands.

It's a 10gal, so 10% WC is "one-gallon"?? Try 3+gal change and then a week later another 3. Is there any outside light (a window, ect??)--If so, block it. Drop the light time to 9hours and see.

Okay, it's been 5 days! How's the tank?

Sounds like wishful thinking to me. :)

Actually I have read this too. I use to turn off the light and CO2 for about 2 hours during the middle of the day. I do not know if there was a difference or not.
