My tank has ICH

well today was my first causalty of the ich a neon :( and also noticed that another tetra only has half of his tail fin now wonder if the other fish are nipping at him:confused:
 
not that I see as a matter a fact I see alot more on their bodies some big some small and I dont know if has anything to do with it but today I checked my water and had a hue amount of nitrite dont know where it comes from on sunday I had 0 amm. 0 nitrite and 10 nitrate
 
couple things here.. while I don't believe ich can be dormant.it can exist in low level.. fish can become resistant to ich (which helps to keep the ich at bay)so it can exist in low levels in aquariums..when stress conditions exist..the ich can then get the upper hand and manifest into a full blow infestation.

the same thing can be said about internal parasites..

if you are showing nitrites a couple things could have lead to this. one being the tank cycle was not complete or the tank cycle was fragile or meds killed of some of the bacteria. salt can treat both bacterial and parasitic conditions..it will be non selective on how it works. so you can actually get a drop in bacteria when treating with salt..especially when the dose is too high.

in terms of where ich manifests on the body..it really depends on where the cycst landed when it got to the host..many times you will see it near gills or fins as these are good entry point on the fish(thinner skin)
