My tank is dying?

a little about uv

Just one thing about the uv sterilizer. I don't know how much good that they are really going to do you if you aren't raising babies. In a tank with the proper parameters you probably really won't need one. You'd be far better off IMO investing in a good quarantine set up. If your water conditions are good your fish should be able to fight off most parasites and infections that are probably always present in marine tanks in low populations. If everything is going well your fish shouldn't ever exhibit any symptoms at all. Also if you have a reef you'll be taking away a lot of your filter feeders food.
hth and it's only IMO.

I have been removing the crushed coral over the last 2 days and it is totally amazing how much debris is still in the crushed coral. During each water change I made it a point to siphon out as much of this as I could and there is probably 2 to 3 times more than I have been removing during my water changes. I can definatly see where a small amount of substrate is all that is needed in any tank. Too much is definatly bad. No wonder my nitrates were so high and out of control no mater how much water I changed out.

This has been a BIG learning experience.

Next steps will be to buy more live rock and let the tank cycle then slowly add back my inhabitants. The crabs and snails are still doing great so the water quality can't be too far out of whack.

I would also note that Greenex has a reputation for being an absolutely unspeakable poison. It wouldn't be my cure of choice for anything, and certainly never into anything containing any inverts , or filter bacteria, I wanted to keep alive.
