I am just strongly against using soil in an aquarium, especially as a suggestion for new hobbyists. And I have said as much.

Sprinkle is doing it anyway...

So I'm going to poke a little fun if anything goes wrong.


but in all honestly, it can work, and it can work well, personal choice is that there is too much of a potential for algae or muddy water to make it worth the cost savings to me, but depending on the plants used, it can work really well.

oh yeah. that was it! lol.
what could possibly go wrong? algae? fine with me! so what? a little water poked through sand to have an evening tea with soil ;)
