Hey guys, wanted to get on here and post my aquariums to get a little feedback. The first two pics are of my 55s. One with tiger barbs and bala shark, and the other set up for old world cichlids (Mbunas from Lake Malawi). The third and fourth pics are of two 20 gallon tanks I'm using for quarantine tanks holding my new Mbunas. I know they are overstocked right now, but that is a VERY temporary situation.

holy hangover, Batman! you're a very brave man for letting #3 hang over (3-4 inches?) on either side!

other than that, the slate stacking in #2 is pretty neat. the mantelpiece behind it is a nice touch. replacing fire with water... that's deep, man

how long have you been into aquariums?

I've had aquariums since I graduated college in '98, but when I got married 6 yrs ago I let the hobby go. Now i've got two kiddos who love fish tanks so I figured I'd fire one of my 55s up and have a tank for the kiddos. Well, my wife caught the bug, so now i'm running two show tanks, and the two 20s as quarantine tanks...

I was never really into it when I had my tanks. It took me six months and hundreds of dollars to figure out how to test water params. I was younger with more expendable income... replaced SOooooooooo many fish (i tried to keep koi). I was the epitome of irresponsible aquarist. This time I figured I'd do my research and do it right. Started off with tiger barbs, my boys love to watch them, they are active and hardy. My wife brought home two bala sharks and we dropped them in there. (Gonna have to get an extra large tank for those babies next year.) Then my wife and I decided to cycle the other 55 to start a cichlid tank, because she wanted, (I also wanted) a colorful show tank in our living area.

Thinking back, I think I had a 100gph HOB cheep cheep cheapo on my 55 when I first started. I had some bad advice. My dad's friend said, "Koi are easy to keep, just feed 'em table scraps..." looking back it's no wonder I killed so many fish...

Have you cycled the tanks? If you are putting new fish into a new tank, there is no need to quarantine them. Putting fish in a QT is for when you are introducing new fish into an existing tank. You want to keep the new fish separate to make sure you do not introduce disease into your established tank.

A bala shark will outgrow a 55. Other than that, the cichlids and tiger barbs should be overstocked. This will spread out aggression.

Yeah, the 1st 55 with the barbs and balas was cycled almost six months ago, on the second I did a fishless cycle with bio material from my cycled tank, took about two and a half weeks to get it cycled. The one of the 20s was given to me by an old gentleman with some cichlids (yellow labs, bumblebees, an afra, and a golden) all mbunas. That's when we decided to turn the second 55 into a mbuna tank...
