If the heater stays on even though the tank is above the set temperature, it really does sound like it's gone bad and at the very least is not to be trusted.

I like the marineland neptune heaters as well. They've been quite reliable for me.

for my 38 g

I'd just get one 200w one, I have two of these for my 75g and won't ever use any other heater again these are dead on accurate with zero flucuation.

you want 3-5 watts per gallon for example 10 gallon 50w

55 gallon 200 watt 20 gallon 100 watt the higher end if you have a cooler room temp and the lower end if you have a warmer room temp
