My wally-world rescue betta

wow aqua, I understand ur interest in keeping bettas in good condition but there really is no way to stop these big corporations if you think abt it. And like sum of u said, the more you purchase or "rescue" the more they are going to replace. I'm not trying to be a party pooper here but I'm just stating the facts.

i understand what your saying, but im sure the replacement bettas arnt in any better environment. and even if they breed more babies to restock, i bet that one betta being rescued is happy. besides, they would probably die in the cups soon anyways, and then they would be replaced

The walmart near me used to sell live fish, bettas included, in their pet section, but discontinued them a couple of years ago. I'm unsure of the reason my walmart has for no longer carrying live fish, but it makes me very happy! Another walmart located near my job in a different city still carries live fish. I will admit to having purchased 2 bettas from that walmart for the price of one. One day while in the fish section I noticed there were 2 male bettas in the same cup, and didn't see an empty cup nearby to put one of them into! Of course no one was around for me to call their attention to the situation, and even if someone had been around, they probably wouldn't have cared. The 2 males had obviously been fighting, but had seemingly ceased by the time I saw them. One of the male's scales had been scraped off. It was heart wrenching! I quickly purchased them both (really got one for free, haha walmart! kind of... I know that was wrong of me!) and took them back to work where I could give them fresher water and separate temporary quarters. That was back in december, and they're doing just fine. :) Walmart bettas aren't the only fish being mistreated in that store... My opinion is that if people stop buying fish from Walmarts all over, they will eventually stop selling them. After all, it isn't their forte to sell fish specifically, so if they stop selling fish, they still have all that other crap to make their money from. LIke I said, my Walmart stopped selling fish. It could have been because of a decline in their sales. I know I rescued some walmart bettas myself that one time, but now I try and not even go by the fish anymore so the temptation won't be there.

i hear a lot of people claiming that bettas are replaced whether you buy them or they die but i am told by employees that this isnt the case. the one near me is stopping live fish soon because more die than they sell. its all taken down in inventory and they see a net loss so they stop bringing them in to sell. i say that if you are in a chain store, dont buy a betta to rescue it rather buy it because you want it. dont force yourself to adopt an animal out of pity which may be too far gone at that point... better it dies in the store than in your house. i would never buy beat up or sick ones either since they are already stressed out. i guess everyone is entitled to their view, i just add the facts from people who work there and know their ways. the more they sell, the more they order. the more they dont sell or die, the less they order. its a big business like any other, based on supply and demand... and profit.
