one of the 2 C. trilineatus I had died sometime last night. I'm bummed.

It was somehow injured after moving over to the new tank. At the end of last week, I didn't see it for a few days and got worried. The past weekend, I saw it out again and was relieved to find it alive, swimming with the other trilineatus.

But I noticed something was wrong with its mouth area and one of its ventral fins.

Yesterday, it was swimming oddly and lying very still for periods of time. It weakly swam up to the surface a few times. I managed to net it without much fuss and put it into a breeding net.

I checked this morning and found it dead. I got a closer look at it's face and noticed much of the flesh was missing, including much of the lower mouth.

Right now, I'm sad it's gone and a little upset that it happened. Such an odd cause of death.

I thought it had bruised its nose at first but a closer look showed a lot more than a bruise.

I don't think any of the other tank residents caused the damage. The most aggressive in the tank currently are perhaps the apistos, but they were added after the damage.

Anyone else want to take a guess?

*shrugs* I have no idea. I thought about posting as I had a similar problem actually. I have a well established tank, weekly 50% water changes, definitely not overstocked, and when I added 5 arcuatus, they all ended up with the same symptoms and eventually passed. I even tried upping my water changes, as even though my nitrates are generally less than 20ppm I thought it might help. I thought it might be some kind of weird bacterial infection perhaps. But really I don't know. I also thought maybe my tank was too deep or too warm for them...

ive had something like this happen before. one of my cories lower "lip" had torn away from its body. it subsequently had a terrible time trying to feed though it tried really hard. i quarantined, tried melafix and clean water to no avail. just a few days after noticing the injury, the little guy died. my theory had always been that hed hurt himself on my fluorite or a piece of sharp driftwood.

any sharp things in your tank?

Substrate is rounded gravel and sand. Before the move, substrate was mostly Flourite on top and they didn't having any problems.

Maybe it darted really hard into the driftwood or glass?

It was fine the first few days after the transfer, before it went missing for a few days.

Maybe it was a strange bacterial infection. But no other fish has shown signs of illness or infection.

Did you add Aquarium Salt? I think Cory's aren't tolerant of Aquarium Salt. I think I read that somewhere. (although, just recently read that, I have always added some salt to my tanks that had corries, and never noticed any issues)
