I have been using Ehiems for many years but have never mastered the re-up.
Anyone have a method for getting all the bloody air out. I shake the thing, tip it sideways, thump it.. and all but yet it goes on churning loudly at me for weeks with air bubbles presumably in the propeller area, which I can only rarely silence. There must must be a better way.

Not of any real help...but for me, that is why all Ehiems are on my "never buy one" list. They are extremely frustrating and not worth the $s or trouble.

Slightly off-topic, but it's funny about opinions toward eheims. People either say they suck, or they are the best filter known to mankind, rarely anything in between. Kinda funny...

I love eheims ( ^_~)b ...but I'm Aquarius too.

Are you sure you are closing it up tight, o-ring in place, tubes, joints, etc... I use the sucking method, it's gross, but I just swish my mouth out with sake afterwards. When the tube your sucking on (**** this is getting worse by the sentence) fills up until level with your tank, put your spray bar on start her up. The filters are very quiet.

But I've only ever done that once for my two ehiems. I use the hose taps. expensive but very worth it. Turn of Eheim, shut off the taps and disconnect. Clean canister. Replace. open up taps. The cansister fills. When thats done turn it on.

I agree with Skillful Abbott sucking on the return line is the best way to prime then just close the quick dis-connect valves during maintenence to keep water in the lines,

If that doesnt help take apart and check the impeller.

I find the Eheim Classic Series to be the quietest filter I own by far and also very low maintenence I have to clean my xp3 3 times before I have to touch the 2217

I agree that using the disconnect fittings is the best way to avoid the air problems with the Eheim plus make cleaning the filter so much easier.

I actually find it easier after cleaning the filter to NOT fill it with water first. The filter is lighter & easier to place under the aquarium and it seems to purge the air from the filter completely. After cleaning the hoses, I just take the pressure/return hose disconnect end, briefly suck on the end until the water starts filling the canister then point it into a pail until the water flow is air free. Close the disconnect valve, hook it back up, open the valve & plug the electric back in. This method has worked well for me on my Eheim 2028, 2229, 2217 & 2260. I just love these filters!!!
