I just cleaned my 2217 today after not touchiing it for at least four months. I probally could have left it alone for at least another couple months.
Nick you addressed what I'm talking about. The problem isn't starting the filter. I have a 2217 with disconnects. That part works fine. It the thumping and the shaking for days afterward. It never really runs quietly due to air trapped in there somewhere..I'd rather not turn the thing upside down but that might fix it, can you say detritus cloud.
As for Eheims they may not be the quietest or easiest to clean but they run forever.
Only clean your Eheim when there is a full Moon. After you remove it from the tank, take off all of your clothes except your left sock. Then walk around the filter counter clockwise 3 times while repeating the following: "Owa Tagoo Siam"

My sentiments exactly, rbishop. I spent a whole day trying to get one up and running a couple years back. Cutting, splicing, bending, the whole crazy deal. Never did get it going. Finally got frustrated and went and bought an XP3 and haven't looked back. Sold the eheim on Ebay the next day. They are very hard to deal with and the instructions are equally as shoddy.
See, I feel the opposite. I have a Rena XP3 on one tank and an Eheim 2026 on the other. I couldn't be happier with the eheim, but every time I have to deal with the Rena, my whole floor ends up getting wet and the thing sucks air for an hour. Not to mention it has started leaking out of it's power cord, how messed up is that!
I'm trying to talk a guy into selling me an Eheim Pro III for cheap, and if I get it, I'll be ditching the XP3.
I mean, overall the XP3 isn't awful, but it's nothing like my Eheim. Compare the Eheim Classic to the Rena XP, it's a different story, but you really can't compare those two filters anyway.
The 2217 should be virtually silent in my experience and air should be expelled within the first few minutes of it starting. Are you sure you checked all your o-rings,impeller, connections etc?
Try emptying the filter and then set it back up then suck on the return side while it is running once the water is coming out close the valve shut off filter hook up the return line to spray bar then put back on if its not putting ou full pressure and noisy theres definatly somthing wrong.
on a side note while the xp3 is a good filter and somewhat more user friendly imo the eheim classic is a superior filter I happen to run both on my 75

I love my eheim as well. It is quiet, easy to clean, and it far exceeds it's promised gph ratings. Mine self primes? Even my wife commented on the design of it. My only gripe is the green hoses, but they do blend in a planted tank.
One thing I've noticed - lower flow means longer air purge times.
Low flow is usually indicative of poor cleaning - back flush it some more or pull the media layers & rinse them individually in a little used tank water, then replace. You'll see a very noticible difference in flow if you do this on a ~quarterly basis. When these things are flowing properly, they'll purge air very quickly, then run silently.
