Mysterious Rummynose Deaths

I lost another one last night, went to bed with 8 tetras, woke up this morning to 7 tetras. I am beginning to think they are just weak, they swim all around the tank, have great color, are eating, the angels pay no attention to them.

The dead one this morning was somehow sucked into the AC110 intake and trapped between the 2 sections of the intake :(

I hope no more die, I don't want the school to get any smaller, and once I know these are stable will probably bump up their numbers again. They school amazingly together, usually in the evening they split up and do their own thing, but all day long they are in a real tight group.

Rummynose tetras can be difficult in the beginning but once they are in their tank and completely settled they will do just fine.

Down to 5 now. The last 2 that died I noticed them swimming erratically before they died, and one of them looked like they had red gills. The remaining 5 were swimming fine this morning when I left for work, but at this point who knows how many I will have left when I get home.

The odd thing is they only appear to die/get sick when its dark, making me wonder if the angels are somehow trying to eat them but finding out that they are too big for them to eat, but in the process injuring the tetra. I watched all 7 yesterday, swimming, eating etc, went out for a bit in the evening, came home and found 2 close to death.

You should put them in quarantine to see how they fare being separated from the Angels. If they stop dying then further investigation would be warranted...if they don't stop dying then you should get a refund and go with a hardier tetra.

Update

The remaining 5 are still acting fine, swimming strongly, eating like pigs, recognizing me as the bringer of food etc........ will keep an eye on them for a month or so and then once I have my QT tank fixed probably get another 5-10 to put in to bring the school back up.

Hopefully the attached video will work, feeding time at the zoo :)

without knowing how long they had been at the fish store, I would suspect transport trauma. I mean the shock of shipping to the LFS and then again to your home is quite stressful on RummyNose.

I love the fish and when I buy some I take extra care & time in my own acclimation process to try and help them along as best as possible. I rushed my first purchase and lost the entire group...since then haven't lost a one with the extra care.
