Ok so this is for sure a n00b question.

Why is using tap water bad?

The reason I ask this I because I have always used D- ionized water for all my tanks..and I don’t know why. It was just what I was told to do and it was what was best. but I would like to know why if any could tell me please? is it just the chlorine in tap water?

Also I have a friend who has a fish tank and he has like crystal clear water. I ask him what he does and he says nothing. He does not grav vac or do water changes he just keeps the tank full by toping it off with tap water from his sink lol Could the tap water be helping with that?

It all depends where you live and how your water is treated before it gets to you.

I live in a rural area so my tap water comes from mountain creeks (excellent water quality) and only has chlorine added to it. Some tap water (usually in big cities) is highly treated eg with chloramine (chlorine and ammonia), clearing agents such as Alum (hydrated aluminium sulphate) and sometimes contains nitrates, phosphates and heavy metals.

nuff said. you can generally get away with tap water treated with a product like Prime though.
