That appears to be a Pseudotropheus socolofi

That's what i though!!

However.....&, i can't get it on camera, is the fact his/her face is now turning quite RED/PURPLE!!!

As far as i know it should not turn this colour!!
Do you think i may have a mix here with the colouration..."Hybrid"!!!????

It's such a weird shade??

NOT a socolofi, they NEVER show anything but powder blue throughout the body...based on the markings and colour, I have to say it may be a mixed breed.

Where did you buy it and what was it labled as?

If it is socolofi. It is definately a hybrid. The fins is Socolofi's. The body coloration is more like a peacock which could also explain the fins. the head is more like elctric blue.

My vote is that if not a hybrid then it is a peacock coloring up.

I have to agree...it has to be a mixed!!
I would have swore it was Socolofi, when i bought it!!! It was in a pure bred tank!!

And...the FS, i bought it (voted in top 5 of all u.k. store's) i have @ travel of 70 miles to get they're because they are so good.

In the last week, it has changed colour !!! And it seemed to happen within a very short time period!!
The red/purple colour has so confused me...

I have contacted the store and the say they are NOT hybrid or mixed breed but pure!!!

HELP!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, should have added this........but, do you think this could possibly be a peacock colouring up?

I have my doubt's...........HOWEVER.....I'm in the dark here!!! :sad

Hmmm not a peacock, its definately a mbuna. Exactly what i cant be sure. For sure not a socolofi. Ive never seen one with yellow. A side shot will help ID, but if its a hybrid you will never know.

You purchased it as a socolofi? Sometimes when fish hybridize thier fry will appear to be normal until down the line a 'weird' looking one will pop up. So, some people will be SURE thier fish are pure until they breed them and get a few funny lookin fry... which could be your case. They were sold to the LFS as pure because the breeder thought they were, but low and behold there are some crossed genes that they werent aware of. Happens quite often.

If your willing to make the trip you could take the fish back and get others, but if they are from the same batch they are all hybrids, whether they look like pure socolofi's or not. They will all carry the hybrid traits.
