But does anyone have experience with the Taam Rio nano skimmer? The man at the pet store recommended this instead of the skimmer I ordered, although from what I've read I still might need another filter. Anyone have any input?[/QUOTE]
I have one, and so far I consider it an excellent purchase. The skimmer is fairly easy to set/adjust, and the filter turns over a goodly amount of water. The filters are cheap, and -very- easy to change. (lotsa room for an additional bag with phosban, too)
BUT KNOW THIS: it has two drawbacks for you to consider
1. To call the instruction manual vague would be an understatement. You will generally have to find out how to operate it on your own, (or ask me, I can help.)
2. This filter does -not- maintain a vacuum very well...the water level in your tank must be -very high- for the filter to draw properly.
I personally don't have a problem with either of these, as I keep the water level high in my tank all the time, anyway.
I don't know what your LFS vendor quoted you for one, but as you are on a budget, (aren't we all?) I would like to suggest a website to you for mail-order consideration;
www.marinedepot.com they usually have smokin' deals on items, and their shipping is reasonable if you're not in a hurry. (or for large orders, shipping is free)
Good luck.
