Nano Reef Tank set up

I am setting up a nano reef (12g w/ 12 lb of LR as of today) and I have a watchman goby. Is there a reason why it constantly swims near the top (except during the night)? I was under the impression it would be sitting on the bottom all the time.

Also, I was told the only other fish that really go into nano reefs would be clowns and chromis. If you know of any others that go well, let me know.

Not sure about the watchman, I'd keep an eye on him if the tank is still new - maybe he's reacting to the water chemistry as the tank cycles.
There are actually quite a few fish that might work. Clown gobies are very small, but they can be picky eaters and some corals don't appreciate their constant 'perching'. Some fairy wrasses stay quite small and might work too. A damsel or dottyback might work, but some can be nasty to tankmates. Check out the fish forum at www.nano-reef.com, I'm sure there are loads more 'nano friendly' fish that I can't think of off the top of my head.

I also had a question about LR. Since I already have a watchman goby in the tank - I have to be careful about having the lid open but, I was wondering if the way I have my LR set up is good for coral to grow on.

Looks like there are some pretty vertical surfaces, which might make it hard to place corals - those higher up on the sides may shade the animals below them. The shelf on top should work well. Keep in mind that unless you're buying frags, many corals will come attached to a pice of LR so you want to leave a little space in the tank for that if you can
