Has anyone ever tried a native tank?? Seems like exotic tropical fish is the way everyone goes, but I think it would be cool to have a tank with Blue-gills , Crappies, and Shiners. One day I'd like to try it.

Bass would be awesome too , but I've heard this is illegal because they're considered game fish....

theres an 'illegal fish' thread floating around somewhere, you could check it for bass.

edit:
oops, it's a sticky at the top of general freshwater.

With native fish every state has a different set of laws. If you really want to keep natives you should contact your local DEC office and see exactly what the laws are.

I had thought about keeping largemouth bass before. I talked to a DEC official and was told It was legal as long as I had a valid fishing license and the fish was legal size. The only thing was I had to get rid of the fish once the fishing season ended.

here in NC you can buy bass and other game fish (at 1-2 inch size) at local farm stores for pond stocking.

^That's pretty dumb for the DEC official to say that. releasing a fish from aquarium setting back into the wild can spread diseases and harm the native populations. what i figure is, what they don't know won't hurt you.

He never said to release it he said to get rid of it. He was talking about eating it or euthanizing it. I have known him for a long time and understood what he was getting at.

ah. still seems like bad advice. for one, you shouldn't eat fish that have been exposed to aquarium chemicals (which is likely if being kept in the home), and for another - wouldn't it be better for the fish to continue to live in captivity rather than having to be killed at the end of the season? is there truly justification for killing a fish for no other reason than because fishing season is over? that seems like some sort of ridiculous beaurocratic rule that somebody just made up.

I may set up a native tank in my classroom. But if I do set one up it would be for smaller fish. I am still looking into the details, but if it works out I'll let you know. If you set one up you should tell us all about it.
