allright I walked into my Lfs yesterday and bam there it was floating in the 75gal. coral tank.A chambered Nautilus! From what I understand they dont like light or high temps so I can't see it surviving long. Please if someone in the area has the ability to save it visit Pet's Choice in Parma on Broadview Rd.It,s 90 bucks.

Wow, neat guy. I don't think I've come across any care information in anything I've read, so I have no idea why a pet store would have one of 'em.

Heres what I found:
Max. size: up to 8 inches
Range: Indo-Pacific
Min. tank size: 100 gallon or larger
Lighting: immaterial
Food: Prefer live prey (crustaceans and fish) will eat carrion
Unsuitable for reef due to their depth, lighting, and temp. requirements

Their optimal temperatures are considerably lower than surface reef temps., so the tolerate normal aquarium temperatures only for a very short period. Under normal reef lighting they are effectively blind.

That is the 2nd case I've heard of a LFS carrying them in the last year. Two times too many.

I have even read that many of their populations are threatened due to over collection.
Best part is they have it in their coral tank with the lights blasting and high heat. The same laws that apply to cruelity to animals should apply to fish in some cases.

I concur 200%. Nautili are deepwater organisms that are used to the cool, near pitch-dark waters of the deep ocean, and only come close to the surface at night. there is no way the average hobbyist could care for one IMO.... they are strictly for public aquariums. i've also seen ones MUCH larger than 8".

There probably is a law close enough to use to get them to quit decimating the populations. I wouldn't pay them for it.

If someone buys it they will go get more as there is money in it. I got my behind chewed out for the scooter blenny incident. I learned. Do not buy these inappropriate livestock from these places or the cycle of abuse will continue.

Talk to the manager.

One of my LFSs had one on display for a few months. It was alone in a coldwater 75g tank with a single actinic, but they lost it eventually.
