Hi, I just purchased a Nautilus shell to attach my aquatic plant to. It was a shell from a Cephalopod which is in the cuttle bone and squid family. The shell has some natural peeling going on and I tried soaking it in a bucket before placing it in the tank but it does not sink easily. Now I am realizing that this is going to raise the PH of my tank which is already high. I am wondering if anyone has used this type of shell in their freshwater aquarium and has any tips on how to prepare it for the tank or if it will dramatically raise the PH? Thanks!

It will not raise the pH much. What size is the aquarium and how much water do you change ho often. Will regular water changes will be fine. What kind of fish do you keep? if not picky it does not matter much. The only thing is that over time the shell will looks less and less shiny. But that's fine too.

Hi and thank you for replying! I have a 25 gallon tank with cardinal tetras and rummy nose tetras along with 3 Cory cats. It is a heavily planted aquarium as well. I don't mind if the shell becomes a bit dull it still is a beautiful piece. Thanks again for your response.
