I have a 100 or so gallon hex with goldies.
My filter (Whisper) has finally died.

What is a good filter? If I am going to spend the money I might as well get something that works.

Eheim 2217 for the win

I might look into a DIY, I say someone on MFK with a simple but very effective large filter... All together it would be much cheaper. $150-$200 is a bit out of my price range.
But if it comes down to it I have no choice, my guys need it.

I just bought 2 brand new fluval 404s (exact same as the new 405s except color) from tinys pond world @ ebay for 70$ each and free shipping. Got them within a week.

I think canisters are the go-to for that size tank. I haven't tried 'em yet, but I do have one for my 75 gallon that I'm setting up (if only hubby would get on building the stand...).

I hear good things about Fluvals, Eheims, Renas, and Marineland Magnums. From what I understand, the newer Magnums have more media compartments than they used to.
