Well, due to something unfortunate (that i never could figure out) all my saltwater fish died overnight, leaving no hints as to why. I've decided to put off saltwater fish until i have a lot more time and money to spend on them, so I'd like to go back to freshwater.

I'm thinking what I'd really like is a single "pet" fish. Something that gets fairly large (not HUGE). Something that has personality. Something that catches the eye.

Now my problem arises in that it's only a 29 gallon tank. I was looking at some of the central/south american cichlids, but they all seem to get too big. Nothing like a 12" fish swimming in a 12" wide tank.

I've also given some thought to getting a handful of angelfish and breeding them, but I already have an angel in my 75g and I think I'd like to do something different. Not to mention finding wild-type angelfish (by far my favorite) isn't easy. The market is full of black ones and koi ones and so on and so forth. I like the wild, striped coloration.

A larger tank isn't exactly out of the budget, but then I'd still have an empty 29 laying around and of course I'd have to put something in it! Can't let a tank go to waste right?

I'm open to totally different suggestions too, so let's hear it. Try to stay away from things I've already done too, as follows:
-Amazonian fish. I already have a tank with an angel, a discus, and a couple silver dollars. Don't want something just like that.
-African cichlids. I had a 55 with africans that i gifted to my best friend and his wife as a wedding gift. So I get my Malawi fix whenever I'm over there.
-Saltwater. that's what the tank just was. Giving up on salt for a while.
-Livebearers. I've got guppies in a 10g and it's just a sad state of affairs in there. If i end up with an aggressive cichlid in the 29, the guppies will likely become feeders, as they're breeding out of control and aren't colorful or anything fun like that.
-Live Plants. I love 'em, but it's just too much chemistry.

So... Suggestions? :o

A pair of salvinis would look sweet, and you might be able to breed them.
Maybe a growout tank for datnoids (they grow VERY slow).

If you're looking for more common stuff, check into firemouths.
I'm not a big fan, but a pair of dwarf crenicichla would look pretty sweet too. I'm on of the few that doesnt seem to like them lol.

I would say a 29g is to small for a single Salvini. But anways how about a Sajica pair or even a single male Sajica, mine are very interactive any time one of us goes near the tank. I could also suggest a archocentrus spinnosissumus although he great me when it's feeding time he runs from the camera and hides.
