Hi

Im after a silent (not just quiet) internal filter for my small tank as it is located in my bedroom. Got a powerhead at the moment that does 390L/ph but it omits a low hum which my sister can hear through her wall at night. Also tried a Fluval 1 Plus but the impeller on that is noisey.

Would i be better going for a bigger filter that i can slow down and hopefully the noise also?

To be honest, those "Whisper" internal filters that you can buy at walmart for about 8$ are dead silent. I have one running in my bedroom and I can't even hear it standing next to it. Also, because of the way the lip is, if the water level is low, you can't hear the water splashing because the water runs out of the outflow and over the front of the filter, rather than shooting out and pouring into the tank. They are also adjustable. Sometimes, if it gets moved a little bit and is sitting just right, it makes a little vibration noise, but all you have to do is tap it/move it back and it's silent again.

I was also thinking about a Whisper 10 Internal. I run my feeder guppies tank with it and works fine. Silent, and even the guppy fry can swim next to it. A good filter.

I have a Duetto 50 in my 5.5g. It's about as silent as you will get and no water splashing if you keep it submerged below the water line. Adjustable flow makes it easy to find a comfort level for my betta. The Duetto Mini may be a selection to consider as well.

I had problems with the Fluval 1 Plus filter noise level too, so I removed it from the tank wall and placed it flat on the tank bottom so it's horizontal (and shooting water upward). This eliminated most of the noise for me, although after cleaning the tank & moving things around I do need to re-position it to its "quiet" position.

I have 2 AC-50's (600gph total) running in my bedroom and they are very quiet. I can only hear them when the water level drops & a little splashing starts. AC-mini's are pretty quiet too
