Sometime before Christmas, I want to convert my 29g into a cichlid tank - my first, you freaking people and your pictures! **** YOU! **** YOU TO HELL!

*ahem* Sorry.

Anyways... the plan is to have 2 pairs of shell dwellers, but wanted to mid-level fish to go with them. But not dwarfs.

So... fill me with your knowledge. Give me your ideas.

Ok, I'll admit I'm novice when it comes to cichlids... but I know tiger barbs aren't cichlids.

You could try Cyprichromis. They are a cichlid from Lake Tanganyika, the same lake as shell dwellers. From what I have heard (not my personal experience) these fish do tend to inhabit the mid\upper regions of the tank. They are also more peaceful than others so you can keep a small group. Check out this link for pictures of this fish.

Other than that I can't think of any cichlids that will inhabit the mid/upper reaches of the tank as most tend to stake out territory on the ground.

Cave dwellers would work too, plan on making one of those DIY 3d rock cliffs...

Be careful of interbreeding with shellies since you want 2 species and most are neolamps. If you get 2 species that don't look similar you will have less of a chance of interbreeding. Cyprichromis are schoolers and really need more swimming space than a 29 gallon would provide. They don't get too big, but they need room.
Julis would work well, either transcriptus, dickfeldi, or ornatus. N. leluepi would also be a good choice.
