Need Advice on Rescued Neon Goby

i wonder why your name is a feather duster but yet in your avatar there is an aiptasia. but on the other hand, hope the little guy pulls through. they are cute but don't live long

You mean my adorable feather dusters that I got from petco are really aiptasia? Hehehe, just kidding. I put a aiptasia as my avatar to remind myself to get off my lazy butt and zap them one day with joe's juice. My boiling water doesn't work very well on the big ones.

And thanks for the best wishes. I hope he pulls through. It is sad they don't live long though. Thats why I haven't bought one before. Since we hardly get tank raised fish here it is very likely that the wild caught gobies here will only live a couple of months in your tank.

grins you may be surprised if you haven't seen a full grown one. they have a bunch at the shed aquarium in chicago and they suckers are really BIG! they are at least 2.25" long and almost fat as pencils! i was dumbstruck the first time i saw them there.
Wow! Pip is only slightly over 1.5"

Oh and freaked out last night. Do they change colors at night time? I woke up in the middle of the night and decided to check up on him. It was weird. He was a clearish whitish color. There was no visible black or blue. I woke up this morning and he was normal.
I've never noticed mine doing that, but like Salty's mine hides at night. I'd not be surprised if they have night colors though, the first time I saw Butter's night colors I was scared he was ill.

i thought more like couple of years. i don't even know if mine were wild cought or not, but they lived 2-3 years. i think if your gobby is eating he'll only get better from there

I bought two from a LFS that came from Segrest Farms that were tank raised and tiny. They were so small that you couldn't see any color in their blue strips, somewhere between 1/2" & 5/8". I floated them in a breeder net to make sure they we're eating and alive before I let them get into the rocks. Within a week or two they nearly doubled in size and they had bright blue strips.
I have a different type now that have white strips. One is nearly 2" and almost fat as a pencil while the other is just over an inch and only half as thick.

yep some fish do that. My clowns turn pale @ nite and turn back to normal by day. Weird huh? Don't wry my clowns r healthy and eating well I hope ur goby will do the same.

You were right. I already see some growth. Well... maybe not in length so soon, but he appears fatter and more colorful. It would be great if he manages to reach a inch in a week or two. The breeder net is a good idea. I should have done that first instead of releasing him right away. I was going to do it after I placed him in the tank, but it seemed like too much stress for the goby to catch him all over again.

Glad to here I wasn't going crazy. I have a feeling most neon gobies go through a color change at night, but most people don't see them. For some reason my goby prefers to stay perched on the rocks. He did hide for a bit when I placed some macro algae in there. But other than that he stays outside.

Update for Today:

Neon goby ate some more. And he actively stalked my hi-fin goby for no reason.

Sounds like he's got a chance. Congrats FD, good job!!! My yellow tang, chromis and mandarin dragonet all change colour at night. It could also be the fact there is no bright light illuminating the colours, but my mandarin goes a ghostly pale colour, the chromis go darker and the tang goes pale with a black blob!!! Quite freaky when you first see it.

I think its a type of defense for fish. I turned on my lights and he still looked a weird color. He blended in nicely with the rocks. I actually have a picture I can post later tonight. It was pretty cool to see.
lol and I was definitely freaked out when I first saw it. It would be cool if humans could also change colors so fast. Other than bad sunburn of course.

And thanks Grins. I have always had lots of luck with my 10G. Much more luck than my large 125G or 35G. Its probably why I love nanos so much.
