hi i was changing over to sand and it turned my water very cloudy. I washed it for 45 mins but i guess that wasnt enough. I found pool filter sand under my pool that is a larger grain, and was thinking of using that. Would it be ok becuase it has been there for a year would that be a problem.

If it was in a dry place, reasonably sealed up, and not in contact with any chemicals...shouldn't be a problem. You will still need to rinse it though.

Certain sands, such as play sand, will always turn your water a bit cloudy at first, no matter how much you rinse it. This will subside with water changes and filtering.

I put pool filter sand in my tank recently. I must say I love it. I rinsed it under the sink using a 3 gallon bucket and I had to change the water in it at least 4 times for each load.
it is great because it settles back quickly after vacuuming or just poking it to release the gas that gets trapped in there.

as far as using something that was outside for a year or so, i am not sure.

I put sand in my 110 in December. I didn't rinse it at all. I just dumped it in the tank. This is an hour after I put it in and then the next morning and then a pick from the weekend. Even if you rinse the crap out of it, you will still have cloudiness...

thanks for all your help i will just let the water filter out and clear by itself. and i really like you tank.

I often use Quickcrete play sand. All but clears up in 24 hrs and I never pre wash it.

Maybe I should just do that. I use Quikcrete play sand as well, but prewash my sand for about 30 mins per 5 gal bucket, just stirring and replacing the water a few times. I'll be putting some in my 28 gal this week, I'll just throw it in there and see if it makes a difference.
