I have been keeping various fish in several tanks using untreated water from my personal well for a couple of years now.

I am moving to town, so now I will need to use the treated from the tap.

The water for the town comes from wells which are only a short distance from my well in the country, so overall chemistry should be close, so I'm thinking the biggest thing I will need to deal with is chlorine.

I change my water by siphoning and refilling with five-gallon buckets. What is the best method to treat (declhorinate) tap water for a 55 gallon tank?

I like to use Dechlor brand because the dose is one drop per gallon. I treat the water in the buckets before adding it to the tank. I've never understood why most other conditioners have doses like "one capful for 10g". Who ever heard of a 10g bucket. What if you are doing 2g changes on a 10g tank?

I treat mine before I add it but some people dose the whole tank with declor and then add the water and some pour in the dechlor while they're filling the tank. I guess which ever method works best for you. If you haven't bought a water conditioner yet, may I recommend Amquel Plus or Novaqua?

I like Amquel Plus but Prime is cheaper and just as good. I just got my first bottle of Prime.

You can use prime up to 5 times the normal dose to detoxify nitrItes for emergencies..

Make sure to check and see if you have chlorine or chloramines. The water company will tell you and most have websites that tell you. If it is chlorine any dechlorinator will do, pick one. If it is chloramines then you really should stick to Prime or Amquel.
