The Hagen unit pictured is just a commercially produced version of the DIY CO2 method. It too uses sugar water and yeast to start fermentation and CO2 production.
One could possibly argue that it would be less likely to suffer a catastrophic failure of some sort in the long run, as it has been designed especially with yeast fermentation in mind. I know soda bottles can withstand a certain amount of pressure but they will perish eventually.
The other bonus is that the kit comes with a CO2 diffusor that can go in the aquarium. This is far more effective than just running an airline in with an airstone.
However, if you DO consider buying this unit instead of making your own, DON'T get it from Petsmart....get it
here where it's cheaper!
In fact, I called them the other day about this and it was down to $17.99. Considering that most DIY soda bottle setups will cost in the region of $15 to set up, (by the time you've got the bottle, airline tubing, yeast, sugar, aquarium safe sealant to fix the tubing into the cap etc. etc.) you could alway just opt for the Hagen idea instead.
Swings & roundabouts........as they say.
