I just got my old 55 gal. tank back from my ex. Problem is she used it for a lizard. I've heard that the lizard urine makes the tank toxic for fish.

What's the best way to clean the tank?

I have a fist sized bag of sea salt I think may help. I was also thinking of using some crushed filter carbon. I'm a novice and need advice.

Thanks,
Z

Use 2:1 water:bleach. Scrub it with a clean cloth or sponge. Rinse well. let dry.Give it a big squirt of dechlorinator. Do one more rinse using dechlorinated water. Make sure you inspect the seals, and fill it up without anything in it, to check for leaks.

Since you mentioned you are a novice, you may like to head up to the article section and read up on fishless cycling :)

Welcome to AC! :bday:

I've heard that you can use salt to scrub the tank if need be. (I'm assuming it's a glass tank.)

Whatever you use, rinse, rinse, and rinse some more with plain water. If you use a bleach solution, get plain bleach, not lemon scented or with other additives. And don't use soap!

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, welcome and good luck. I will read all I can on cycling and setting up a tank. :read:
