The Eheim Ecco series is designed for ease of use but you're paying a premium for that. The classic series is a no frills canister that isn't easy to work with but very reliable and much cheaper than the Ecco. Eheims are the quietest filters I've used, Eheim pumps are sometimes used in PC water cooling for that reason.

I love my Fluval x05 series. No problems and I have had it for two years about. Had an older x03 model if I recall back in the day. Also no issues, although I feel the x05 is better designed and quieter.
