I just moved everything from my 15G to a 20G tank so the 15G is empty only with water, few plants, heater, filter, and gravel. Since I want it to be a hospital tank, do I have to keep everything running?..and do i have to put some ammonia there in order to keep the good bacteria?.....thanks!!

IMO, it is easiest to tear down a QT tank unless you are using it. Otherwise, you get tempted to use it as a normal tank, or "just keep a few fish in it" to keep it cycled :) . If you keep an extra bit of media in your current filter, you will have it on hand when you need to set up the QT tank, and will be instantly cycled. Check out the QT article if you haven't already
