need filter suggestions

Big Al's will price match plus give you an extra 5% off, but you need to call them so they can verify the price, i order from them time to time, no problems.......... http://www.bigalsonline.com/

Ok, so it sounds like the two brands to look at are Rena and Eheim. I am torn between the 2 at the moment. As far as maintenance goes, is one easier than the other?

Go with the classic Eheim's, if money is not a problem get two.
They do come with quick disconnects which is super easy to remove in/out tubes from the can.
These filters have been known to last for over 30 years!
Plus they come with ALL the media unlike the XP series which you will need to add bio.
The XP is a good although it has some minor bypass and unproven for longevity it is a decent filter.
Eheim>Rena

I have Rena XPs, Marineland C series and a couple of others. My opinion is simple, I just got a new XP2 for my used 55 that I picked up off craigs list. The basket system is a pleasure to work with, it is self priming and it is very quiet. My oldest one is about 4 years now bwcause that is when I got back into aquariums. The C series is a decent filter but is manual primed, takes perfect alignment to reassemble and the shutoffs on it only worked for a few months. Now when I clean it I need to hang the hoses up on the tank to keep the tank from siphoning itself empty through the hoses. It does prime easily but I like to just sit an empty filter housing in place and open the hose connection head like I do with my Rena. Why would I want to struggle with a priming pump for no reason?

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. It sounds like the eheim is the best filter for the money.

I don't need another filter that is going to break down or be a hassle. I already have one of those.

Mott- I would love to get 2, but at this time I can't afford to purchase 2 new filters. Perhaps down the road I can add another one.
