I could use some help choosing a substrate for my new 10g shrimp tank. Besides the shrimp I'd like to have some low-light plants and maybe some corys. I want black substrate.

I'm looking at these:

  • Flourite black (regular or sand)
  • Tahitian moon sand
  • Eco-Complete
My main question is: do I need Flourite or Eco-Complete for low-light plants? If not, I'll go with the moon sand as that's the cheapest (at Drs. Foster and Smith). I don't want to add ferts so would the moon sand be OK?

:iagree:I totally agree...

If you dont want to add any ferts then Eco or Flourite are your best options.
Both will provide some nutrients for root feeders.Moon sand is as far as i am aware inert and of no use to plants.
I have always used Eco Complete on all of my planted tanks and it is very good, a bit more expensive than just black sand but worth it IMO.

Id say either eco complete or fluorite if you are going to do plants. These in themselves dont provide may nutrients to plants, but they do absorb and hold nutrients over time (at least I know that fluorite will, its just baked clay). The sand isnt going to be able to do this..

Thanks for the input folks. I got Flourite black sand for it. The tank is set up and I've got the shrimps and snail in there. I've also got some low light plants in there as well. I'll post up some pictures sometime this weekend.
