I just got a new eheim 2217 filter. I am having difficulty trying to figure the instructions out. Lets just say they suck. I am having trouble trying to figure out how to hook the thing up.

The spray bar has a U piece. Is there supposed to be a piece that connects the 2 together? They don't fit otherwise. The only solution that I can think of is 2 splice the tubing and connect them that way. Is that correct? Istructions sure don't say.

I guess splicing the tubing is the only way to connect all of the pieces. Correct?

I didn't want to do anything before I found out for sure.

Would be nice if the instructions were a little clearer. Please help.

i dont have your model of filter but have several other canisters and i have never had to 'splice' pieces together so i could use the filter. i would wait and take it to the LFS and have them show you how it goes together BEFORE 'splicing' any of the pieces. i dont think that would be covered under the warranty.

Hmm....interesting. Splicing is the only thing that I can think of. The pieces do not connect together otherwise.

All pet stores around here are at least an hour away. Would prefer to figure it out without their help if possible.

I never figured out what that U thing was for. I went hose - double disconnect valve - hose - spray bar and hose - double disconnect valve - hose - return tube with strainer.

You don't need that other thing.

OK. Thank you. You have been a HUGE help. That is what I was thinking too. Just wanted to make sure.

Merry Christmas.

Ok. It is all hooked up. Is there a trick to priming it?

It says something about using the starter bulb or universal installation kit both of which you have to buy extra. Won't help in this case. You can also suck on the hose. That sounds easy enough but once the water starts it is difficult to get the hose hooked back up in time.

Shouldn't be this difficult.

The green slotted U-shaped piece is meant to slide over the hose where it contacts the rim of your aquarium. It keeps the hose from kinking and really should be used. It can be difficult to slip the hose into it. You just need to pinch the hose where you want to install it and squeeze the hose into the slot. This must be done before there is water in the hose. It may help to warm the hose under hot water first to make it easier.

I copied this photo from another site. The green slotted piece should be resting on the tank rim.
