i am confused by the term shallow breathing ... i noticed my long nosed hawkfish wasnt eating.. and that it was breathing faster the most of the other fishes .. is this what it means by shallow breathing ? there arent any signs of disease on the fish ... just that he isnt eating..

Yes. That is what is meant. This, and not eating, means something is wrong, quite possibly a parasite, like ich, which preferentially attacks the gill tissue.

Try feeding a garlic supplement in his food. I have yet to have a sick fish after 6 years with this tank and I use Garlic in their food just about everyday. When you mix it be careful not to put as much water in the food first so as not to dilute the garlic.

just another question. would a sick fish or parasites present in the tank affect corals ?

Any type of parasite that attacks fish will no affect inverts (which include coral), however certain sick fish might have bad affects, like a sick box fish can poison the aquarium as they release poison from thier skin when stressed.
