I just perchased both of these corals today and the polyp seems to be doing fine because it has opened up but the xenia looks bad, atleast i think it does

the xenia shrunk into tight little thing and the bud is not opening. the size of it actually shrunk. is that a bad sign?
i have a 10 gallon and that is where it is right now on the mid level
for the lights i have a 28 watt power compact aqualight
lfs said it would be enough for a xenia
i also have a yellow fin damsel and a clown fish does that have to do anything?

i have a skilter and 295 gph power head

i am really worried about it and please help!!

xenia is funny. in some tanks it grows like a weed and in others it will slowly melt away. xenia will often shrink when moved or touched but usually expands back to its normal size shortly after. you might want to give it a quick dip a cup of tank water and a couple of drops of kent iodine.

As I said in your other duplicate thread--Xenia are very sensitive and prefer an established aquarium with very stable parameters and SG. Do you have a test kit? They like 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and very low nitrates. Xenia are known to be a good indicator of water quality. Sadly you will most likely lose the xenia just because your tank is so new (just set up the day before). Do you know what is your salinity at? Do you have anything to measure it? They can be sensitive to high or low salinity too. I would say from here on out....GO SLOW! Only bad things happen fast (or overnight) in SW. If you go slow you can have an amazing reef tank -but it takes time, patience and lots of research!

didn't read the other thread. i assumed it wasn't a new tank. i would wait about 4 months after the tank has completed its cycle before adding any corals to it. patience is the most important thing in having a successful tank....there is an old saying that i feel applies very well in reefkeeping....haste makes waste...
the more you try to rush your tank along the more money and time you will waste. you will be able to have a great looking tank one day but it takes time. don't rush

i decided to tank the xenia and polyp back and hoping they will take it back because it has just been one day

how did you acclimate the coral, ive had mushrooms stay shriveled up for about a week after ive really made them mad.

weird through personal experience and other reefers as well, Xenia supposedly HATES pristine Water.
but as you said, putting anything in a SW tank a DAY!!!!!!! after its set up is just not good practice. (i.e. you loose money)

My experience with Xenia has been similar... Pristine water never led to good things for Xenia in my tank. It was, however, the first coral I ever added to our reef tank, right around the 1 month mark (although in a much larger tank). It did really well for more than a year, then we added a rabbitfish that found it to be very tasty.

Slow is the way to go with a reef tank. Very little about a reef tank is cheap, which makes it more advantageous to go slow.

what is pristine water?
and i just put the coral in and moved it to the position i wanted and left it alone
i think that the polyps are really mad at me because it will not open even though it did before i made them mad
