i just got my oceanic 180 gal, (with overflows) and my amircale Maxi-reef 400 W/D. i think i have a pretty good grasp on what to do, but i was told it would be a good idea to install a ball valve on the inlet hose from the overflow. my filter actually has 2 separate towers of bio balls, so one hose from each overlfow runs to its own "tower" of bio balls. i went to Home depot and looked at their ball valves and adapters and found what should work. dont i need to glue all this together? will pvc glue be toxic in my tank? the return line from my pump i'm guessing i will just use flexible clear plastic tubing. any suggestions?

Audio - yes, you will need to glue it all together. PVC glue is what you need - and no it will not be toxic.

Do this first though - test fit everything dry. then re-test ;) When you use PVC glue, put it on both pieces you are connecting - then when you put the pipes together, move quickly. Push them in as far as they will go together. this will be more than your dry fit. You can use a little twisting motion if need be. You have about 10 seconds max before the glue sets up once the pieces are together - so don't fool around.
Let the pipes cure a day before running water thru them.

If you really want to read about plumbing a tank - go here:

They have more FAQs, etc on plumbing scenarios than you can ever imagine
