Need help with 29 gallon BW setup

I have a 29 gallon tank, for about 8 months i had 10 tiger barbs,5 green barbs, and a pleco in it. I recently got a 40 gallon and moved all those fish into it. So now i had a tank that was empty, went to wally world with my kids and they fell in love with the last 2 spotted green puffers, so i got them. I put them in the 29 gallon. So i thought i would check and see what they eat. But I've come to realize their is a lot more i have to do, so here i am.

Can i make it a BW tank without removing the puffers?
Do i have to use sand?
 
ok,i bought another 29 gallon for the other one. Will do a fishless cycle first, with that instant cycle stuff. Now can i add anything with the Puffer in the 29's or do they get that huge home to themselves? Any suggestions? Should i wait for the other tank to cycle b4 i start adding my salt. Is sand a good idea with Puffers.
 
Since 30g is the minimum for an adult, I don't suggest any tankmates in there. Are you using Bio-Spira for "instant cycling"?
 
yes, i'll will be getting it today. Can i start adding salt to the tank that already has been cycled. or should i wait a bit and do them both at same time? I've been feeding them dried krill, they never ever eat it all, constantly i'm removing the left overs after a day or so.
Why is that?
Oh yea, i remove the puffer b4 instant cycle, right!
How big do they get?
I do not know if i have juveniles or not.
 
Feed less--do not leave leftover food in the tank. It will pollute the water. They should be eating a variety of foods:

Add the B-S directly to the filter after doing an 80% water change to the tank. Wait a week or 2 (until the parameters are perfect for at least a week--ammonia/nitrite 0, nitrate <20), then you can start raising the SG .001-.002/weeky 50% water change.

You should use aragonite sand or crushed coral for substrate, to keep the pH steady, around 8.
 
you can train your puffer to be with other tank,mates you have to feed him a variety of food like mussel brine shrimp blood worms squid chopped clams prawns ect. and basically any uncooked sea food item at the store but wash first. also it takes awhile from them to adapt with other fish. what i experience was first feeding him live food like feeder fish but now all he will except is the food listed above and ocasionally ghost shimp. also feed plenty of snails.
