Need help with 29 gallon, stocking!

Three out of five Petsmart employees I have spoken too have said I can keep 5 6" Cichlids in my 29 gallon tank! The other two employees (and everyone else with more than an hour of last minute training) has said even one 6" Cichlid would be too big.

How well do Cichlids feast on other fish? I know Gourami's are a "semi-aggressive" fish slightly smaller than Cichlids, do they eat other fish? Maybe an Angel might meet the requirements, it is a Cichlid and you can keep 1 in a 29 gallon tank, but I am not sure if they eat other fish or not. Good luck finding your predator.

One or two 6" cichlids are fine in your 29.... provided you're up on wc and general maint.

IMO, he may just want the excitement and frenzy and fascination of the big predator, catching and killing smaller fish. I think it's akin to fighting pitbulls.

It makes me sad but there are some fish that will satisfy him.

My tanks are the absolute opposite.

I understand how some people like the "thrill" of seeing other fish getting eaten but honestly, for a 29 gal. nothing will really be good for that. Also, feeder fish are a lot more trouble than its worth. Chances are you're not gonna be raising your own and if you decide to buy them from a LFS they will be disease filled, eventually killing your fish. I would def. spend some time researching specific fish to ensure that you can properly house them, for the duration of their lives...
There are plenty of fish that eat live food like brine shrimp and can be housed in a 29 gal. happily.
Keep us posted on what you do
PS. this is from a former PetsMart Worker... sorry I had to say that :)

I do not think that it has to be specifically fish that it eats as long as it is something alive.

He is still quite determined to get an Oscar...so what size tank would we need for one?
