Hello!
We bought 3 feather dusters about 2 weeks ago and they are dropping parts of the tubes. I am wondering if this is normal, thinking maybe during transport from the ocean to store, from store to new tank, maybe they lose parts? Will it regrow? How does the worm grow? If it drops too much will it move and live in the live rock? All three are still out and waving happily so it doesn't seem to have hurt them too much but they are getting much shorter.

From which end? Mine lost a little bit around of the exterior--sort of like a shed, but the whole of the tube remained intact. Was it damaged at all that you could see?

The tube isn't typically that big a deal, as long as there is enough room for the worm to be inside. Pretty sure the worm builds the tube from spit, so it should always be able to add to it if needed. Losing the crown is much more worrisome, I think.

It lost the pieces from the that the crown comes out of. When we first put it in the tank the emerald crabs moved it out of its way once, the starfish ran over it, (but the crown never went in when the starfish touched it), and it is in a pretty strong current spot. So I was thinking that the stress of moving plus the traffic made it lose parts?
I read on one of your links that the feather duster will sometimes shed its crown and that is okay not to worry, but ours have kept theirs. Just parts of the grey tube fall off at the end. It didn't look damaged but I don't have anything to compare it to, I really don't know.
Is there a site where you can identify the feather duster? Mine are white and pink, really pretty but we have no idea what type they are.

Feather duster worms creater thier tube from secretions they release, so a damage tube isnt that big of a problem, as long as the animal isnt damaged and the crown doesnt fall off.

Thanks!
I guess I will just keep my fingers crossed. As I type all 3 are out and waving happily, so maybe all is well?
Thanks for the help! I love sites like this to help us newbies!!
