Can't have too many Tiger Barbs...

I took a couple of my giant danios out of my 55g to put in the lower 30g. They are darn fast, and after I got the second one out, I noticed one of the tiger barbs was injured.

I'm not sure if he was already hurt, or if while running from the net he ran into something.

He looks like he got a swipe taken out of his lower side right underneath the pectoral fins. There is a gash like a bit taken out, the pectoral fins seem to be gone, and he has something white hanging out of him that looks like intestine. He is not laboring too much to breathe, but also not swimming around too much. Didn't eat when I put food in the tank.

I put him the lower 30g. The reason I was moving the 2 danios over to that tank was to live there for a while and provide fuel for the bio filter. I used plants from old tank and filter media from my old tank, so they should be OK.

No meds on hand tonight to try.

Should I let him go and see how he does? Meds? Euthanize?

Looks like part of the digestive tract to me. Without the ability to perform surgery, chances are the he will die from infection with that sort of injury. Its your call but I don't see him surviving.

Would a little bit of salt help at all?

I know it looks pretty bad. If it was just external, I think it might be able to heal. The way it is hanging out, I think it may be a lost cause.

I agree that is probably part of the digestive tract. If that is the case, I need to just euthanize him.

Well, he went to fish heaven this morning.

I don't think there was anything to do for him, but I'm really curious about how he got injured.

You should have tried some fish MD and tranqualized him with that stuff you use when you have to trim puffers teeth and you should have tried to shove his intestines back up in there and stitch him up :)
