Help! :help:

I got 2 HOT magnum 250 canisters when I bought a used 40 gallon tank. Prior to this I only had an AC HOB filter.

Does the filter media in the magnum need to be replaced every 4 months? and if so, does the tank go through a mini cycle? and does the filter media need to be rinsed out once a month in tank water?

I also got an UGF with the tank. I was thinking of making it a RUGF. Is it worth having a RUGF? and if so, is it much work?

Also does anyone know where I can find a diagram or manual online to the HOT Magnum 250?

Thanks.

Ok, I'm speaking as if what I would do.

Get 4 micron sleeves, run those 24-7, change over to a RUGF (super bio-bed, :D ) and don't worry about the cartridges clogging, you should have one on standy when they clog, open it up, pop in a new one, close it, your done. The RUGF will host most if not all the good bacteria and keep it clean at the same time.

But then thats just me.

As for what I do, I have a magnum 350 on a 29 (overkill, no?) and run the micron filter 24-7, with one on standby for when the next one clogs. Its great, water is super clear. I do use 2 sponges in the filter for bio-filtration, but in your case, not needed. The RUGF would take the place of the sponges.

more questoins on the RUGF

I think I need to get a pleated filter for the inside of the magnum. The magnum had carbon jammed on the inside. I also have 2 cartons of lose carbon.

Since i'm cycling the tank - Should I get the micron pleated filter for inside?
Or use carbon like they did?

I know nothing about RUGF filters, especially setting them up. I found the plates for the bottom, and a clear hose. I also notice there look like 6 stubs that come up from the bottom. 5 are capped, one is open. Do I hook something up to these?

Does anyone know of diagrams on the web that explain what is needed for an RUGF and how I hook it up?

I also have a marine 300 biowheel filter - does this tie into the RUGF?

Any help with diagrams or explaining how to setup a RUGF is appreciated.

Thanks,

Nips

the micron pleated insert does a fantastic job of "polishing" the water. I have 2 HOT's and one uses the micron cartridge and the other uses the media basket with a foam sleeve and filled with fiber floss. I do not use carbon in a any of my tanks. I let the substrate carry the bio load and I have very clean and healthy tanks.

How often do you use the carbon?

How often do you use the carbon? Do you use it only after you put medication in the tank? The person who had these filters before me had it chuck full of carbon. I think they also used to breed chilids. i have a breeders nest too. Not sure if I'll use that

Well to set up the RUGF setup you should attach the output hose of the canister filter to one the "stubs" on your filter plate to pump water up through the gravel. Be sure to keep the caps on the other stubs.
You need to find a UGF uptake tube 1" that will fit properly to the stub and then attach your output hose to that. Your other filter hose should in the tank as normal as an intake. You should be able to find a UG tube and attachment hardware at most LFS.

Carbon lasts approximately 1 month. It is recommended that it be changed on a monthly basis. It is used to remove odors from the water as well as some chemical filtration. Other benefits to carbon is that it will render most (not all) medications neutral, and can help to remove them from the water. Some people use it as another means of clarifying the water. Carbon left in beyond its effective life will become a nitrate factory as more waste is impregnated into it. Replace foam sleeve when you can no longer clean it. Use 2 Micron cartridges so one can be in use while the other is renewed. I have never had a bloom or mini-cycle when changing out.

Again, I do not use it myself but many people do. It's just my preference.

I do have a hose for the 250. I think I understand how to hook up the RUGF, but need to go the the LFS to get what I'm missing.

adding more to this

I have the magnum 250 up and running and will be adding fish in a few days.

I also have a biowheel with the magnum 250. Does anyone have a diagram or can explain how to hook the biowheel up the the 250? Do I need a special piece of plastic to join these two together?
