EDIT: TURNS OUT MY FISH ARE NOT GUPPIES, BUT ARE SAMLL GOURAMI's. SAME PROBLEM STILL APPLIES THOUGH!

Hi all!!

Not sure if this is in the right section or not, but I'm most certainly a newbie to all this - thats for sure!

Earlier this week, I got myself a small 15ltr tank and currently have 2 small gourami and 1 Tiger Barb in there. The salewoman at the aquarium said this would be fine and they would all live happily together.

NOT SO!!

My problem is between my gourami. They were all fine for 24 hrs or so, but now one of them (the blue one) is constantly harrassing the other one (the orange one) to the point where the poor orange one spend pretty much all his time hinding behind a small plant. He will come out and sniff around and the second the blue one notices him, he will chase him back into the corner and go back on his merry way.

It's breaking my heart to see my poor orange one being made miserable!

Is this normal behaviour? Blue fish isn't at all interested in the Tiger Barb - just really has it in for the other gourami

I'm worried that the orange one is going to get really stressed out and either jump out of the tank or die from stress.

What can I do to tame my bully fish?!

Pleeease, any advice would be appriciated, because I'm clueless!!

Thanks in advance

wait are you talking about guppies or gouramis?? Gouramis can be hostile at times.. sometimes they arent. But I've heard that your not supposed to have more than one gourami at a time in a tank unless they happen to get along. Im no gourami expert but I'd say the poor guy hangin in the corner isnt enjoying life at the moment. Id take him out

Tiger barbs are well-known to be fin-nippers, and gouramis can be territorial - hard to tell without knowing the species, but I'm guessing dwarfs.

I would suggest you return the tiger barb and the aggressive gourami to the store where you bought them and, if possible, tell the person you bought them from that the information she gave you was wrong.

15 litres is a small tank for three fish that size anyway.

It's best for the well-being of your fish to do some research before buying them because not all fish sellers give reliable information.

You probobly have dwarf goruami's, these guys will bully each other so it's best to stick with one. Thats also a pretty small tank, too small for the tiger barb so I reccomend you return it. (Tiger barbs also prefer to be in schools and will nip)

And since no one else asked - is the tank cycled? From your original post, it sounds like "no" to me. If not, I'd recommend a complete reboot on your tank.

Been there done that with the bad advise my friend. Still working hard to fix the mess my unreliable source of info helped me make :(

I agree to definitely do your research and swap out for more compatible fish. There are exceptions to the rule of course but it sounds like maybe you have dwarf goruami's. My honey has two males in his 65 gal tank however he has two separate large plants that each have decided to be their own turf. Same set up with a co workers tank resulted in the goruami's trying to kill each other. For a tank of that size have you considered cardinal tetra or small schoolers?

Best of luck!
