Hi all,

I am finally moving my Mbunas from their crowded 29 to a more roomy 55. For filtration on the 55 I have an AC 110 and an Eheim 2217. I just bought the Hydor 300 watt inline heater. I want to keep as much equipment hidden as possible so I built a custom 3D background that will hide the intakes for both of the filters.

So here's my problem: The intake on the 2217 is 16/22mm and the return is 12/16mm. The heater should be on the return side of the canister but the heater is 5/8" i.e. 16mm.

So my obvious choices are: 1) put the heater on the intake side  of the canister 2) add a "reducer" to increase the diameter from 12 to 16 and buy a 16mm outlet pipe. So then my output would be: Canister --> 12mm hose --> double-tap --> 12mm hose --> reducer/enlarger --> 16mm hose --> heater --> 16mm hose --> 16mm return pipe.

Will the 2217 push the water properly through the expanded output? Is it really that bad to heat the intake water instead of the output?

I would really appreciate the wisdom of my fellow fishkeepers. TIA, rbgiantfan

If you ran it on the intake, the heater would just need to be cleaned more often.

I don't think the expanded output would make any difference to the effectiveness of the pump's action; but I also don't think there would be a problem putting the heater on the input.

Thanks for your input. I think the verdict is to put it on the intake side. Eliminating the need for the reducer also eliminates one more potential leak.
