Hey guyz,

I just went out and got some rocks from the mountains by my college

I want to put them in the tank.

What do i need to do to these rocks to prep them for the tank

or is it generally a bad idea?

Help :help:

Thanks guyz

Brad

Anytime you add to your tank from actual landscape in nature you run the real possibility that you could introduce some form of foreign bacteria or unknown surprises to your tank Be very careful when using things from outside in your tank. At the very least you need to really scrub the rocks you acquired from the mountains. Just make sure not to use soap since soap is nearly impossible to get rid of once introduced to your tank.

Thanks a lot guys!

I'm hoping they work well in the tank :)

Great link by their mostlycihclids. Play geologist and make sure you know what rocks you're using. A good hard scrub and plenty of soaking hot water is usually sufficient to kill all the nasties in all but the most holey rock.

Yeah i'll be sure to giv it a good scrub and soakin!

dont boil your rocks though. some may have tiny pockets of air that will expand and cause the rock to explode

(and now someone else will chime in that "they've boiled hundreds of rocks in their 43 years of fishkeeping and never once has one exploded")

but is that a chance you really want to take?
