i just got back from vacation, and came home to a dead yellow tang. a day or two before i left, he has white blotches on him and discolorations. now, my flame goby has the same thing. all my inverts seem to be doing very well though. any ideas what it could be?

Marine velvet will cause a golden sheen to the fish, and you should be able to see little bumbs onthe surface of the fish. When was the last introduction? Fish can be infected at a sub-clinical level--meaning, the have very few parasites and no distinguishing symptoms. If a stress event occurs that lowers their immune systems ability to resist the parasite, it can develop into a full blown infection. Since tangs are prone to parasites (IME), it's possible another fish brought the infection in, and the tang succumbed. His death could have reduced conditions enough to stress the other fish, as well.

I would pull the fish out and treat them with an anti-parasite treatment. Leave the tank without fish for 14+ days, and then return the treated fish to the main tank.

thanx orion girl. i added the last fish about two weeks ago. also, after giving my tank a good water change, i noticed little white creatures on my glass. cant really make them out, but there are alot of them, and they are about the size of a grain of salt. and they slide all around the glass. any suggestions as to what this could be?

thanx

The critters are most likely just pods--parasites are seldom seen off of their host. Individual marine velvet organisms are not visible to the naked eye.

pods are a good thing yes?

i scooped up my dead yellow tang yesterday. the person i had watching my fish could not get it out, so it decomposed into this brown blob. also, i had tons or brown sediment over everything. i syphoned it up this morning though, things are looking back to normal

thanx again oriongirl

Yes, pods are good.

Since the tang was decaying, test for ammonia and nitrites--you may need to do some water changes to bring those levels back down to acceptable levels.

both are 0, but maybe thats because i did such an agressive water change. i did a little over 12 gallons, so alots 20% water change.

i think this is marine velvet though. whats the best way to go at this? the flame goby is the only fish in the tank.

Removing him and treating in a hospital tank allows you to use more aggressive medications. A small tub, with a heater, a bubbler and some PVC for hiding places works well--a HOB for circulation will work as well. I'm not that familiar with most drug treatments--seldom use them. I've treated with Hexamit--definitely not safe for using in a main tank, but effective.

my lfs offered to treat him in one of his tanks. how long will the marine velvet stay alive with out a fish host?
