I'm concerned about one of my dward gourami in my tank. He's up at the surface and is just hanging out there. I dont know if he's stressed or what but he won't swim around. I checked the water and ammonia and nitrite are at 0 while nitrate is at 20ppm. hardness is at 50 ppm and pH is above 8 (just how the water is here) The other fishes are fine and I just fed them right now and they are eating. I can't isoloate the gourami since the only other tank i have is filled with paper and leaks with water. I can't figure out what it is...any ideas

how big is your tank? what else is in there? how long have you ahd the gourami?

sorry about that...its a 20gallon tall and I have another dwarf gourami, a black mystery snail, 3 zebra danios, a platy and black molly. I got both gouramis about two weeks ago and they adjusted ok (never had one before so I wasn't sure how they adjust) I know they are a timid fish and will hide, which they do, but this one is simply at surface, not gasping for air or anything but just at the surface. Thanks for the quick response...

how long has he been doing this? maybe hes just hanging out..... noones messing with him, right?

Well, gouramis can breath atmospheric air(just like bettas) should they need to do so. Whats your filtration/water movement(airstones, powerheads, ect.)?

I know they breath air...but i knew something was wrong. He died withing the last hour... :( I wish i knew what happened because he was fine yesterday. The other one is acting fine. I have a Penguin 150 and the water is not topped off leaving some space for the snail to come up. So there is plenty of water movement. As i mention, the water is fine but i don't know what happened...guess i'll just keep checking on the other gourami...

I have seen Dwarf Gouramis go shy and not eat. They tend to do this if there are other active fish or aggressive fish. They may also do it if they are the only Dwarf Gourami. Other reasons could be that there are not enough plants and very few to no floating plants. To keep a Dwarf Gourami happy a male should have a few female friends in the tank. There should be floating plants to dim the aquarium lighting and you shouldn't have tankmates that are active or territorial.
