Need Hood Ideas Non-Wood

I would think the lightest way to make a hood with wood would be to use ¼ finish grade ply (can be know as under layment). Use 1 by 1’s for the corners and where ever needed on the top of lighting support. One sheet 4x8 is only about 5 LBS.

I build furniture as a hobby, and the best Idea I can think of would be to build a frame with 1x 1/2 boards that fits into the lip of the tank nicely. Support any fans and ballast on the frame (maybe run a beam midway up the side for the fan). For the facade, I would say try MDF (Fiberboard) in a 1/8" size, it's easy to cut and sturdy, infact if the frame is a little wobbely it will help make it more sound. The drawback to MDF is that you'll need to seal it to prevent water damage, but it can be painted to match your decore or some wood grain tac-paper to make it match your tank.

FYI, tell your hubby I've seen worse, infact I've done worse myself. :D
