I have a few Large aquariums but don,t have much experiance with nano or little ones. My son has a beta fish in a bowl and I was thinking of getting a 5 gal set up with a HOB filter or something. What would be good tank mates for a beta? I want to keep it small and not complicated but I would like to give this beta a better home. What do you guys think? Plants? Shrimp? Snails? Other fish? WHat would you guys sugjest. I would love to here form anyone who has done something similiar. Thanks in advance for your advice. I am sure this may seem like a foolish question But I just dont know about a 5G or smaller tank. Thanks in advance.

the 10 gallons are a nice size, but just a beta with plants in a 5gallon would be great!!

In tanks that size you dont want any other fish in there, with the exception of maybe snails and or cories.

OH one more thing.

Marineland sells those explorer 3 gallon tanks, that are eclispe but a bit cheaper. They have everything they need inside them, filter, light etc. I Kept my Beta in there for 2 years, until I moved him into my friends 45 gallon betta sorority, Now he's enjoying His retirement!

We put our betta in a 3 gallon eclipse system. It started getting algae growth and we heard they can have peaceful tank mates. So we got a pleco and found him chasing the pleco around the tank the next day. Like really chasing non stop full speed. I took him out and put him back into a 1.5 gallon betta container. Put some guppies in with the pleco and put a snail in with betta. Even the snail had to get picked on for a day. The betta attacked him about 10 times in the first hour we had him in their. But the snail just would sit in his shell and wait out the storm. Now the betta knows he can't kill him so he gave up. It works out great, the snail keeps his betta bowl clean and he leaves the snail alone.

I just got back from the LFS and was talking to him about it. He told me someone brought in a 5G bow front yesterday and he already gave it away. I told him that would have bin perfect and he sail that his ESP must be on the fritz LOL. I am gona keep looking but I think a 5G with snails and plaints will be the way to go. I thank yoiu gor your replies. ANybody have any luck with shrimp in a beta tank?

Not shrimp exactly, but my 20 gallon used to be overrun with copepods or scuds, about the size of small shrimp. Now that my betta lives in there, the scuds are gone. He ate them all up in about a week. I'm betting that he would eat shrimp, too.

I've had large success with keeping cory cats with betas... but I've found that Bettas are very individual some will live with Cories and some won't. Most will get along with Chinese Algea eaters as well. Oh and ghost shrimp make a great part of the clean up crew as well, they're often too fast for the betta to gobble up, even my Clawed frog can't catch them. :)

I like 5-10gal set ups but avoid 10 gallons typically because there isn't much you can stock with bettas to utilize that big of a tank. :(

5g is a great size for Bettas, my Betta loves it! I did have some ghost shrimp in the tank before I added the betta but he quickly chased them down. He was in a community tank before so he is not particular aggressive either so it all depends on the Betta. Try some ghost shrimp, they are cheap, and if all goes well maybe you could add different shrimp later on. Good Luck!

Oh I also had a snail with him for some time and they did just fine together.
