Hey,

Well... I havn't posted on here in awhile... and I just needed some advice, nothing really important... just I wanted to get different people's ideas on how to stock my tank...

At the current moment I have:

3 cories
2 dwarf gouramis
12 neons
and a pleco...

my tank is a 70gallon... and I have pretty hard water.. I use to have guppies, platies, and mollies but I think maybe they're too sensative because they always seemed to die off...so I'd like to stay away from getting anymore of those...

I was thinking of getting 3 more cories, and maybe 12 more neons?

I'd just like to get a natural and colourful looking tank full of community fish... so any suggestions and ideas are welcome =)

If you're looking for more color, why not try some glowlights to hang with your neons?? I have a school of 7 neon/8 glowers and they look really nice together. You could also try a school of black phantom tetras -- the males are all black/white/gray -- the females have red fins on the underside -- they're much larger than the neons -- but they tend to occupy the mid levels of my tank and are really nice looking -- and they're calm and not the least bit aggressive to the smaller guys.

Well, I wanted to get some bigger fish to fill out the tank... so, just wanted to get some ideas rolling before i go out and buy some more fish to add to the tank...

I like how the 12 neon tetras look in the tank right now, but they're soo small.. and I just thought maybe getting 6-12 more would make the school of them look more fuller..

I like how the dwarf gouramis bring colour into the tank, and their size...

I know the cories are just brown but they're so cute looking lol... and I only have 3 of them, but my local pet store where I get all my fish from only seem to have the albino cories.. and I dont like the way they look lol... so when they get in more I'll be sure to pick up atleast 3 more...

I once was thinking about getting some angels... but the owner at my local fs tells me that they wouldn't get along with the other tank mates in my tank...

I can't recall the name of the fish, but they were black with red tails? can anyone tell me their names?

Are you talking about a Red Tailed Shark or maybe a Rainbow Shark? They tend to be bottom swimmers at least IME. I have blackskirt tetras as my middle guys in my 55 gal and I really love them...they are silver with black stripes and fins. They tend to stick together with their group and they are very active.
Here are links to pics of these fish

Misscrosson,

What makes you think you have hard water? From what you are saying, I would say the complete opposite. You probably have soft water.

Livebearers for the most part, especially mollies, are hard water fish. Tetras et al, are soft water fish.

Further to that, however, I have very soft water myself and have no trouble keeping "hard water" fishes.

Perhaps there is a different problem afoot?

Well, everyone says we have hard water... and I cant remember what the reading was last time I tested the hardiness of the water... I'm pretty sure that it was... 7.6 or something... I'll actually test it out today to be sure (sorry just waking up, so brain isn't fully running yet hehe)

Yeah, the redtail shark... I always see these fish in the one tank at my local fish store, and I've always thought they were really neat looking...

Just doing some quick reading on this fish, it's semi-aggressive... which worries me because all of the other fish in my tank are peaceful fish... and I'm still not really sure on the fish I'm going to stack my tank with, and I dont want to limit my choices by picking this fish....because like I said previously I'd like to get some bigger fish in there, besides the small ones, I'm just clueless on some nice colourful bigger fish (that wont cost me big $$$)...

Also, the redtail shark would fight with my cories no?... and in one tank you can only get one redtail shark?

Well, 7.6 is your pH, not your hardness. That's just a measure of how alkaline or acidic your water is. My tap water runs from 7.4 to 7.8 pH, depending on the season.

The factor that plays a part with fish is the GH, General Hardness. While the municipality has our 5 dGH listed as "moderate hard", to fish that's pretty soft stuff.

I keep different types of fish: rainbows (which for the most part prefer a harder water), Green Spotted Pufferfish (which need really hard water and have to go full marine at around 4"), to Amazon fish (silver dollars, neons) which require a softer water.

For the most part, fish can adjust to different types of water. If you're having a problem keeping a certain type, then, as I already stated, perhaps there is another problem?

Another problem?... well, not sure on the problem... because all the other fish seem fine, just the mollies and platies never seem to lasts.... but it seems as everytime I get them, they go threw shock when adding them into my tank....it also could be that I just seem to get back luck when picking out the mollies and platies at the petstore...

Here's a picture of my tank...
